Two notable giants are Amway and Avon. The premise is the same for both - recruit and sell and you can get rich. Will you? - probably not, can you - absolutely, but there are a few things you must first learn.
The difference between the two
Amway is based on new recruits sponsoring other new recruits. you use the products yourself and teach others to do the same. Direct selling is not emphasized (who wants to do that)? The more people you get in the business and they get in the business the more money you make. The problem arises when you mention Amway - people start to run, instead you discuss the possibility of making a substantial income - and yes you certainly can but you must be committed!
Avon is very much the same however there is more emphases on selling the products to others. With both companies you have to deal with downlines (motivate encourage train and such)
Since I've been involved with both I know very well how they work, there are factors that I like about each. The products I've created are for the Savvy Avon representative, I'll explain how and why they work.
Why Amway works
The concept is actually very simple, the more motivated a sales force the more willing they will be to push on to achieve their goals (and naturally the goals of the upline and parent company). We live in a very negative world, when you empower someone with the possibility of wealth and security they quite often blossom and actually do achieve great wealth. If you've ever been to an Amway meeting you know the air is filled with electricity (its a great feeling). An Amway representative showing the plan can be unstoppable so long as he keeps his eye on the ball.
Usually both husband and wife are involved in the business, one feeding off the other for the common good of both. A couple in the Amway business are generally unified given they are both on the (same page).
Why Avon Works
The company has class, style and is up front with representatives regarding the selling of the company's products. The products them self are top notch and all come with a 100% guarantee. good sales Representatives are helpful, service oriented and generally knowledgeable of the company's products.
No Education Required
You need not be a Harvard graduate or possess an abnormally high income to become successful in MLM's. There is an old saying - A students teach B students that end up working for C students! What does that mean - well quite often it's the day dreamer that made it big - he (or she) didn't hamper them self with the constraints of a regular job. The kept their eye on their goals and did what they needed to do to get where they wanted to be. Yes its that simple remember this "anything the mind can conceive and BELIEVE it can achieve"! I highlighted believe because that's the key, its like Christian faith if you want to move a mountain you must first BELIEVE.
Help Enough people get what they want and you'll get what you want.
Zig Zigler was right, MLM's are successful when you keep your eye on what the other guy wants - work with them to achieve their goals and voila you just made it!
So why am I here?
Amway Representatives build their business using tools (generally tapes for information and motivation) Avon representatives have very little available when it comes to useful tools. The brochure as far as I'm concerned is about it. With Avon you need to sell product and if you want to generate more money you need a downline (recruit).
Here's the problem
Cold calling works best, there was a time when Avon Representatives went door to door (ding dong Avon Calling) does that ring a bell? Today folks don't want to do that, we've retreated into our suburban homes and lock out the rest of the world. (thanks news media preaching doom and gloom).
The Good News
Actually it's very simple, if you want to earn a substantial income in this venue the rules are very simple, there is no confusion.
1. Want something in life, whatever that may be.
2. Write it down - focus on it.
3. Be patient! it takes time to build a business.
4. Work at it - The harder and smarter you work the quicker your dreams will be realized.
5. You only fail if you quit.
6. Don't fail
7. Associate with others going in the same direction - be at meetings!
8. Don't expect others to do it for you.
9. Listen to your upline.
10. Teach and support your downline.
11. Avoid the negative. (if someone starts whining - flee from them).
12. Be generous with your time to others.
13. Share your business with others.
14. PROMOTE YOUR BUSINESS!
15. Enjoy the success that you have earned, then decide how much more of it you want!

Hey, I just found your blog and I love it (posted a link to it on my Avon blog, too) - I just have comment, I know here in Canada it's against Avon rules to just leave the brochures at people's houses. I don't know about the States or other places, though. Instead, what I did was make up little fliers with my contact info and dropped those, so if people are interested they'll call or email and I can bring them one.
